ENG4U: What Grade 12 University English Covers and How to Do Well In It

ENG4U

ENG4U is English, Grade 12, University Preparation: a 1.0-credit Ontario course worth 110 hours, with ENG3U as its prerequisite. Nearly every Ontario university program requires it, which makes it the one Grade 12 course almost no applicant can skip. Most pages about ENG4U are online schools selling the credit. This one covers what the course contains, how it is marked, and what separates a Level 3 essay from a Level 4. Checked against Ontario Ministry of Education sources in September 2026.

What Is ENG4U?

ENG4U is the university-preparation stream of Grade 12 English in Ontario. The course consolidates the literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills students need for post-secondary study.

The prerequisite is ENG3U, Grade 11 English University Preparation. Some schools also accept NBE3U, English: Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices, which satisfies the same compulsory English credit.

The course follows The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 11 and 12: English, 2007. That document is still in force. The ministry’s curriculum site states that apart from the 2023 Grade 9 course, the 2007 English curriculum remains in effect for Grades 10 through 12.

Do Universities Require ENG4U?

Yes. ENG4U is the single course nearly every Ontario undergraduate program lists as a requirement.

Ontario universities ask for an OSSD with six Grade 12 U or M courses, and they calculate admission averages from the top six. Engineering, business, science, and nursing programs all require ENG4U alongside their subject prerequisites.

The practical consequence is that your ENG4U mark counts twice over. It clears a prerequisite, and it lands inside your top-six average for most applicants. Graduation requirements are set out on ontario.ca, and program-specific requirements sit on each university’s admissions page and in the OUAC guide.

ENG4U vs ENG4C vs ENG4E

All three earn the compulsory Grade 12 English credit. Only ENG4U meets university admission requirements.

Course Pathway Prerequisite Focus
ENG4U University preparation ENG3U Literary criticism, argumentative essays, independent research
ENG4C College preparation ENG3C Informational texts, workplace communication, applied media literacy
ENG4E Workplace preparation ENG3E Everyday reading, functional writing, non-fiction

ENG4C and ENG4E satisfy the OSSD requirement but will not clear a university prerequisite.

What Do You Study in ENG4U?

The curriculum sets four strands: Oral Communication, Reading and Literature Studies, Writing, and Media Studies.

  • Oral Communication. Active listening, academic note-taking, presentations, and analysis of what you hear.
  • Reading and Literature Studies. Novels, plays, poetry, and essays, read for argument rather than plot.
  • Writing. Literary essays, research writing, and control over academic register.
  • Media Studies. Bias, framing, and critical media theory applied to real texts.

Unit structures differ between schools, though most build around literary criticism, poetry, essay analysis, a major novel or drama study, and a culminating task. Shakespeare appears in most sections, Hamlet more than any other play. Our essay on Hamlet shows the level of argument a Grade 12 literary essay aims at.

Media Studies carries real marks. Students who treat it as filler lose an entire strand.

What Books Do You Read in ENG4U?

Text selection is set by your school, not by the ministry. The curriculum specifies skills and leaves the reading list to the board and the teacher.

Drama studies commonly use Hamlet, Macbeth, or King Lear. Novel choices include The Wars, The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, and Life of Pi. Poetry units draw on a mix of canonical and contemporary poets, and the media unit uses current material rather than a set text.

Check your course outline rather than buying anything in advance, since sections in the same school often differ.

How Is ENG4U Graded?

Seventy percent of your mark comes from term work and 30 percent from a final evaluation, an exam plus a culminating task in most schools.

Every assignment is also scored against four achievement categories from Ontario’s assessment policy, Growing Success. In plain terms:

Category What your teacher is looking for
Knowledge and Understanding Do you know the text and the concepts?
Thinking Is your analysis your own, and does it go past the obvious?
Communication Is the writing clear, organized, and suited to an academic reader?
Application Can you transfer the skill to a new text or situation?

Read your rubric against those four headings. Most students sitting at 78 are strong in Knowledge and Communication and thin in Thinking. That is fixable once you can name it.

What Changes From ENG3U?

ENG3U asks what a text means. ENG4U asks you to argue for a reading and defend it.

Three things get harder. Analysis becomes independent, so “the author uses imagery” no longer earns marks without an argument about effect. The independent study unit puts a long piece of work on your own shoulders. And exam conditions require a full literary essay written without your notes.

How Do You Write an ENG4U Literary Essay?

Start with a thesis someone could disagree with. “Hamlet delays revenge” is a summary. “Hamlet’s delay reflects a moral objection to revenge rather than indecision” is an argument.

Then structure each body paragraph the way your teacher taught it, TEAL or PEEL in most Ontario classrooms. Topic sentence, evidence, analysis, link back to the thesis. Do not adopt a competing acronym from the internet when your rubric was built on the one in your classroom.

Four habits raise a mark:

  • Integrate quotations into your own sentences rather than dropping them in whole.
  • Analyse the quotation for at least as long as the quotation itself.
  • Use literary devices as evidence for an argument, never as a list of things you spotted.
  • Keep the thesis visible. Every paragraph should be answerable with “because of the thesis.”

Our guides to thesis statements and critical analysis essays go deeper, and EP 65 on writing an English essay walks through the structure.

How Do You Prepare for the ISU and the Exam?

Choose your ISU text early and practise one timed essay by hand before the exam.

Work backward from the culminating task. Choose your ISU text early and annotate as you read. Rebuilding an argument from an unmarked novel in the final week is the most common cause of a rushed ISU.

For the exam, practise writing one literary essay by hand in the time allowed, using a text you know well. The constraint is planning speed, not knowledge. Five minutes of outlining saves the paragraph that otherwise wanders.

Is ENG4U Hard?

It is harder than ENG3U, and manageable for anyone who reads the assigned texts and writes drafts early.

The difficulty is not the vocabulary. It is that marks now come from independent analysis, which cannot be produced the night before. Students who struggle are skimming summaries instead of reading, or writing single-draft essays.

Where Can You Read the ENG4U Curriculum?

The ministry publishes the full ENG4U expectations free, online. The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 11 and 12: English, 2007 contains the ENG4U overall and specific expectations.

Reading them takes twenty minutes and tells you exactly what you are being assessed on. Match your rubric’s wording to the expectations and the marking scheme stops being a mystery.

Six Mistakes That Cost Marks in ENG4U

Most lost marks in ENG4U come from describing a text instead of arguing about it.

  1. Plot summary where analysis belongs.
  2. A thesis nobody could argue against.
  3. Quotations dropped in without analysis.
  4. Ignoring the four achievement categories on the rubric.
  5. Leaving the ISU until the last two weeks.
  6. Treating Media Studies as a throwaway strand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ENG4U?

ENG4U is English, Grade 12, University Preparation in Ontario, a 1.0-credit course of 110 hours. It consolidates reading, writing, oral communication, and media literacy skills for post-secondary study. The prerequisite is ENG3U, and the course follows the 2007 Ontario curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 English.

Is ENG4U required for university?

Yes. Nearly every Ontario undergraduate program lists ENG4U as an admission requirement, including engineering, business, science, and nursing. Universities ask for an OSSD with six Grade 12 U or M courses, and ENG4U counts inside the top-six average for most applicants.

What is the difference between ENG4U and ENG4C?

ENG4U is the university-preparation pathway, focused on literary criticism, argumentative essays, and independent research. ENG4C is the college pathway, focused on informational texts, workplace communication, and applied media literacy. Both earn the compulsory Grade 12 English credit, but only ENG4U meets university admission requirements.

How is ENG4U marked?

Seventy percent of the final grade comes from term work and 30 percent from a final evaluation, most often an exam and a culminating task. Individual assignments are scored against four achievement categories from Ontario’s Growing Success policy: Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application.

Is ENG4U hard?

ENG4U is harder than ENG3U because marks depend on independent literary analysis rather than comprehension. Students who read the assigned texts and draft essays early manage it without much difficulty. Those who rely on summaries or write single drafts tend to plateau in the high 70s.

Can someone help me with my ENG4U assignments?

Yes. Homework Help Global works with Ontario high school students on ENG4U essays, ISUs, and exam preparation through one-to-one tutoring and editing. We help develop a thesis, structure the argument, and check a draft against the rubric categories. Send your assignment and deadline through the free quote form for a price before any work starts.
