Turnitin vs GPTZero: Accuracy, Features and Pricing Compared

turnitin vs gptzero

The key difference in Turnitin vs GPTZero is access: Turnitin is an institutional tool your instructor runs on submitted work, while GPTZero is a standalone detector anyone can use, with a free plan and support for 26 languages.

Turnitin vs GPTZero is the comparison most students search after an AI score shows up where they did not expect it. Both tools estimate how much of a text an AI model wrote. They serve different users, report results in different ways and have different track records in independent tests. A score from one says little about a score from the other.

This guide compares the two on access, accuracy evidence, false positives, features, languages and pricing, then explains which detector matters for your situation.

Key Takeaways

  • Your instructor sees Turnitin’s AI report, but Turnitin hides that report from students.
  • GPTZero offers a free plan with 10,000 words per month and paid plans for heavier use.
  • In a 2023 study of 14 detectors, Turnitin ranked first for accuracy and GPTZero produced more false accusations.
  • Both vendors say an AI score should not serve as the sole basis for punishing a student.

How We Compared Turnitin vs GPTZero

We compared the two tools using vendor documentation, two peer-reviewed or preprint studies and published university decisions, without running our own detection tests.

We checked Turnitin’s help guides and product update log, along with GPTZero’s support pages and its own comparison page. We also reviewed two independent studies and the University of Waterloo’s decision on Turnitin’s AI feature. We scored the tools on six criteria: access, accuracy evidence, false-positive risk, features, language support and pricing. Vendors update their models several times a year, so the date at the top of this page matters. Neither company reviewed or paid for this comparison.

What Is the Difference Between Turnitin and GPTZero?

Turnitin is a submission-checking platform bought by schools, and GPTZero is an AI detector sold to individuals and institutions alike.

What Is Turnitin?

Turnitin started as a plagiarism checker and added AI writing detection in April 2023. Schools license it. It runs inside learning platforms such as Canvas, Brightspace and Moodle when you submit an assignment. The AI writing report requires a Turnitin Originality license, and only instructors and administrators can see it. An instructor can download the report and share it with you.

Turnitin also offers Clarity, a writing space where students draft inside the assignment and instructors can replay the writing process. For a closer look at the AI report itself, see our guide on whether Turnitin can detect ChatGPT.

What Is GPTZero?

GPTZero is an independent AI detector that anyone can use from its website or Chrome extension. It analyzes text at the sentence and document level and labels results with a confidence category. Its Writing Replay feature rebuilds a Google Docs revision history so a student can show how a draft came together. GPTZero also sells plagiarism checking and team plans, and it connects to Canvas through a partner tool called Scaffold.

Turnitin vs GPTZero Accuracy: Which Detects AI Better?

Independent testing from 2023 favoured Turnitin, while GPTZero’s own benchmarks favour GPTZero, and neither company publishes a current, independent accuracy audit.

In a 2023 study, a team led by Debora Weber-Wulff tested 14 AI detectors on 54 documents. Turnitin ranked first under all three scoring methods, at 76% to 81% accuracy. GPTZero scored 54% to 68%. The authors concluded that the detectors they tested were neither accurate nor reliable.

GPTZero tells a different story. Its comparison page cites a late-2023 benchmark of its own that puts GPTZero at 99% accuracy and Turnitin at 95%. GPTZero’s FAQ adds that in its “high confidence” category, it labels 99.1% of human articles as human and 98.4% of AI articles as AI.

You cannot line these numbers up against each other. Each vendor tests on its own data, and the independent study ran in early 2023. Turnitin has since updated its English model several times, including in October 2025, February 2026 and October 2026, according to its model documentation. Treat any accuracy figure as a snapshot of one test, on one dataset, at one point in time.

Turnitin vs GPTZero False Positives

Both tools can flag human writing as AI, and the risk rises for short texts, edited texts and writers whose first language is not English.

In the Weber-Wulff study, Turnitin produced no false accusations across the human-written and machine-translated documents. GPTZero flagged 9 of those 18 documents, so half of that set would have led to a false accusation against a human writer.

A Stanford study by Liang and colleagues found a sharper problem. The team tested seven detectors, GPTZero among them, on TOEFL essays by non-native English speakers. On average, the detectors flagged 61% of those essays as AI-generated, while making far fewer mistakes on essays by U.S. eighth graders.

Turnitin hides low scores. Any score from 1% to 19% shows as an asterisk with no highlights, since Turnitin says false positives rise in that range. Even so, the University of Waterloo turned off Turnitin’s AI detection in September 2025. The university cited unreliability and bias against students whose first language is not English. In its own tests, the tool flagged human writing as 100% AI.

If a detector has flagged your own writing, our guide on why your writing gets detected as AI covers the common causes and how to show your process.

Turnitin vs GPTZero Features

Turnitin bundles AI detection with plagiarism checking inside your course, while GPTZero offers more languages and tools a student can use alone.

Plagiarism Checking

Turnitin’s Similarity Report compares your paper against web pages, publications and past student submissions. GPTZero sells plagiarism checking as a separate product. Neither AI score tells you whether you cited your sources well, so keep the two checks separate in your mind. Our post on avoiding plagiarism through citations covers that side.

AI Paraphrasing and Bypasser Detection

Turnitin added a separate category for AI-paraphrased text in July 2024 and extended detection to AI bypasser tools in August 2025, both for English only. Our AI humanizer comparison explains how these tools interact with detectors and where they fall short for academic writing.

Language Support

Turnitin detects AI writing in seven languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish, German and Dutch. It added the last three in October 2026, according to its product updates. Submissions in other languages get no AI report. GPTZero lists 26 supported languages, including French, Hindi, Chinese and Korean.

Writing Process Evidence

Both companies now record how a document gets written. Turnitin Clarity replays drafting inside the assignment and shows instructors pasted text and typing patterns. GPTZero’s Writing Replay rebuilds Google Docs history and records sessions in Canvas, Notion and other platforms. You control who sees the report.

Turnitin vs GPTZero Pricing

Turnitin sells institutional licenses with no public prices, while GPTZero lists a free plan and monthly subscriptions.

Your school pays for Turnitin, and AI detection requires the Originality add-on on top of the base license. GPTZero’s free plan covers 10,000 words a month. As of August 2026, a pricing tracker listed paid plans from $8.33 a month on annual billing (Essential) to $24.99 a month (Professional). Team plans are priced on request. GPTZero loads its pricing page in the browser, so confirm current prices on its site before you buy.

Why Do Turnitin and GPTZero Give Different Scores?

The two tools use different models, thresholds, length limits and language coverage, so the same paper can earn different scores from each.

  • Different training data. Each company trains its own model on its own samples of human and AI writing.
  • Different thresholds. Turnitin hides scores under 20%, while GPTZero reports a probability with a confidence label.
  • Different length rules. Turnitin needs 300 words of prose; GPTZero accepts shorter text, and its accuracy drops on short samples.
  • Different handling of edits. Turnitin reports AI-paraphrased text in its own category, which changes how a revised draft scores.

A GPTZero result does not predict your Turnitin result. Use it as one data point at most.

Turnitin vs GPTZero: Which Should You Use?

Students cannot choose Turnitin, so the useful question is how to work with whichever tool your instructor uses.

  • Students: Your instructor sees Turnitin’s report if your school licenses it. A GPTZero check cannot preview that report. Keep drafts, notes and version history. Use GPTZero’s Writing Replay or Turnitin Clarity if your course offers it, since process evidence carries more weight than any score.
  • Instructors: Use the tool your institution supports, and treat a score as a reason for a conversation. Both vendors warn against using a score alone to discipline a student.
  • Institutions: Turnitin bundles AI detection with plagiarism checking and LMS integration. GPTZero costs less, covers more languages and lets students check their own work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GPTZero more accurate than Turnitin?

The evidence is mixed. GPTZero’s own late-2023 benchmark rates GPTZero at 99% accuracy and Turnitin at 95%. An independent 2023 study of 14 detectors ranked Turnitin first, at 76% to 81%. It placed GPTZero at 54% to 68%, with more false accusations. Both companies have updated their models since, so no current, independent Turnitin vs GPTZero result settles the question. Accuracy also depends on text length, language and editing. Short, much-revised or non-English texts produce less reliable scores on both tools.

Does Turnitin use GPTZero?

No. Turnitin and GPTZero are separate companies, and Turnitin runs its own AI writing detection model, which it documents and updates on its help site. GPTZero competes with Turnitin and publishes its own comparison of the two. A school can license both, but a Turnitin report does not draw on GPTZero’s model, and a GPTZero score does not draw on Turnitin’s. Turnitin launched its AI detection in April 2023 and has updated its English model several times since, with the latest change in October 2026.

Can professors use GPTZero instead of Turnitin?

Yes. Any instructor can paste text into GPTZero or use its educator plans, batch scans and Canvas integration through Scaffold. Some schools prefer Turnitin because it bundles AI detection with plagiarism checks inside the course. Others pick GPTZero for its price and language range. Check your syllabus or academic integrity policy to see which tool your course uses. Some instructors also run a second detector when a result looks doubtful, which is one more reason to keep your drafts.

Why does GPTZero say AI but Turnitin doesn’t?

The two tools run different models with different thresholds. Turnitin hides any score below 20% behind an asterisk and needs 300 words of prose, while GPTZero reports probabilities on shorter text. A Turnitin vs GPTZero disagreement tells you more about the tools than about your paper. Keep drafts and version history so you can show how you wrote it. If your instructor raises a concern, ask to see the report and walk through your research notes and outline together.

Can someone review my paper before I submit it?

Yes. Your school’s writing centre is a good first stop. Our editors can also check your paper for clarity, structure, citations and originality, and our plagiarism scan flags passages that need a source. Send your draft with the assignment instructions and your instructor’s AI policy when you request a quote, so the review matches what your course allows. Editing feedback should strengthen your own argument and voice, which also makes your writing process easier to explain if anyone asks.

Choose the Right Check for Your Paper

Turnitin and GPTZero answer the same question with different tools, for different users, and with different error rates. Your instructor’s tool sets the rules for your paper, and your drafts and process records protect you better than any score.
